Buku The House of Mirth yang sempat terlantar selama beberapa bulan, dibuka lagi. Kembali dibaca dari awal dan dengan kecepatan yang lebih pelan dari sebelumnya. Tampaknya memang buku Edith Wharton itu bukan tipe buku yang bisa dibaca cepat, baru terasa bagusnya pas dibaca perlahan. Pada bab satu buku ini, Lily bertemu dengan Selden dan dari pembicaraan mereka ada beberapa hal menarik mengenai perempuan. Yang pertama:
Everything about her was once vigorous and exquisite, at once strong and fine. He had a confused sense that she must have cost a great deal to make, that a great many dull and ugly people must, in some mysterious way, have been sacrificed to produce her.
Modern slavery!
Lalu mengenai penampilan:
“Ah, there’s the difference–a girl must, a man may if he chooses.” She surveyed him critically. “Your coat’s a little shabby–but who cares? It doesn’t keep people from asking you to dine. If I were shabby no one would have me: a woman is asked out as much for her clothes as for herself. The clothes are the background, the frame, if you like: they don’t make success, but they are a part of it. Who wants a dingy woman? We are expected to be pretty and well-dressed till we drop–and if we can’t keep it up alone, we have to go into partnership.”
Sudah lebih dari 100 tahun, tetap saja standard ganda untuk penampilan “layak” masih ada terus. Standard yang tidak adil, apalagi seringkali masyarakat mendasarkan penilaian pertama berdasarkan penampilan. Bagi perempuan hal ini yang menyebabkan terpaksa menghabiskan lebih banyak waktu dan uang. Argh :(
